Women's Gathering: Day Retreat

Feasting and Friendship with God and Each Other!

Women of Advent you are invited to get away for about three quarters of a day just up the road in Lafayette at Shane Kelly’s home!  The invitation is to come and feast on good food and fellowship and open to what the Lord might be saying to you and others these days.

We will have a delicious potluck brunch starting at 9:30am, then a little time of personal reflection. You can take a walk on a path just outside our door or hang out at the house and stare at a tree! You can be in silence or chat to your heart’s content. We will then come back together and share intentionally with one another. Come and be blessed by getting to know your sisters in Christ a little bit better!

What to bring: Walking shoes if you so desire, Bible, journal and pen.

Loose Schedule:

9:30am Come together to feast on brunch-type foods…click here for the food sign-up.

10:30am We’ll sit together and quiet our hearts and minds to be together with our Lord.

10:45am  Time to walk or just sit around the house…in silence or chatting with a friend…all the while listening and hearing from the Lord.

11:30am A time of sharing, if you’re so inclined, and a time for praying together.

1pm Sharing and heartfelt prayer makes you hungry so a few snacks and more time to just hang out will close our time together…stay as long as you like!

Men's Retreat 2022

It’s that time of year again! Join the men of Advent for a weekend of fellowship, discussion, play, and good food. This is a great chance to connect with other guys at Advent and get to know folks you may not ordinarily have the opportunity to hang out with.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We'll be gathering again this year at the Undertree Lodge. Undertree is a beautiful 8,000 square foot lodge in Jefferson, a little over an hour away from Denver. It has a large gathering hall, fully equipped kitchen, games, and gorgeous views of the Continental Divide. Most of the rooms can accommodate 6 people on a mix of regular beds and bunk beds. For those who are interested in a single-person room for health or other reasons, there are at least two that can be reserved. Please indicate if this is of interest to you on the registration form.

Directions: We are at 97 Sanderling Ct, Jefferson, CO 80432. From the Denver metro, take 285 HWY south. About 5 miles past Jefferson, you will turn left (east) on County Road 15, also called Elkhorn Road. After about 5 miles, you’ll see a fire station and the road curves to the right. At the curve, stay right and take Elkhorn (unpaved) about 7 miles to Link Road on your left (east). Take Link, then an immediate right on Caracara Ln. Take this until it forks at the base of a hill. Go left up the switchback, then an immediate right - this is Sanderling Ct. We are the first drive on the left after the giant boulder and aspens.

FOOD

Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday, and a light breakfast on Sunday. For guys who are free earlier on Friday night this year, we will organize a stop at a brewery on our way up to the lodge, which will provide an opportunity for you to buy dinner (or bring your own). Feel free to bring snacks and drinks to share over the weekend!

We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help coordinate meals! If this is something you’re willing to do, please indicate on your registration form. This involves planning and shopping for the meal (we’ll likely need to feed 15-20 guys, depending on how many register), and then leading meal prep the day of. You’ll have a team of volunteers to help with prep and cleanup, so you won’t be on your own! Keep your receipts from any purchases, and Advent will reimburse you.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

We strongly encourage everyone to join for the full weekend so you can take advantage of all of the opportunities to connect with others, but we realize this isn’t feasible for everyone. Our goal is to plan as much content as possible on Saturday for folks who aren’t able to be there the whole weekend.

We are also looking to plan some optional group activities during free time, like hiking, fishing, etc. If you would be interested in planning or leading a group activity, please let us know on your registration form!

More details to follow, but here’s a general schedule (subject to change):

Newcomer's Gathering & Membership Class

Come for the chance to learn more about the mission and ministries of Advent, ask questions, meet the staff and ministry leaders, as well as connect with others. It will also be an opportunity for you to make a choice to "belong at Advent" (our preferred verbiage for membership), though this is in no way an expectation for those attending this event.

Even if you’ve been attending for awhile, please come! This class is our prerequisite for membership and is held 2-3 times a year.

We will meet at the Kologe’s Home and enjoy drinks and desserts.

Intercultural Competency: Summer Studies 2022

As Christians, we know we are called to love our neighbors, to value those who are different and strive to live in unity. But in such a divided, polarized cultural moment, it can be hard to know how to show up in loving action.

Many of us at Advent have been deeply affected by the racial and political conflicts of the past few years. Perhaps you've started reading to understand but are overwhelmed with the massive amount of information. Maybe you feel convicted or challenged but aren't sure where to practice your new knowledge in your homogenous communities. Or perhaps you've been learning for a long time and could benefit from a fresh perspective in community.

Let's take a step back and focus on our own intercultural competency.

Intercultural competency describes our ability to not only notice but to understand commonality and difference and then adapt our behavior to meet the other.

Think empathy.

Rooted in culture.

The ability to effectively build bridges and strengthen relationships.

INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT INVENTORY

We will be using a tool called the Intercultural Development Inventory, or the IDI. The IDI measures the way an individual or group experiences cultural differences and similarities.  This instrument creates a “worldview profile” to indicate your capacity for exercising intercultural competence and identify issues that are limiting or facilitating development of intercultural competence. It provides a fresh, neutral language to talk about our own experiences and way we see others.

This class is hosted by Tessa Thompson, our Community Life Coordinator, who is a Qualified Assessor of the Intercultural Development Inventory.

CLASS CONTENT

We will meet as a group 3 times, and you will meet with Tessa for an hour long individual debrief of your assessment results. The commitment is for 4 total meetings. You will receive short homework assignments in between class sessions and will be asked to actively engage the content.

Class 1: June 28

We will establish a theological foundation for caring about intercultural competency (led by Sara Bartley and Ryan Ramsey) and work on identifying our own cultural frameworks.

Between classes 1 and 2, you will take the IDI, a 50 question assessment requiring 25-30 minutes of focused time.

Class 2: July 12

We will learn in depth about the IDI and discuss our group results.

Between classes 2 and 3, you will sign up for a 1 hour time slot to receive and review your assessment results. You cannot see your results without participating in this debrief.

Class 3: July 26

We will ask, "Where do we go from here?" and begin by forming a developmental action plan.

LIMITED CAPACITY & COST

This class is limited to 10 participants and the cost is $20.00 which covers the IDI assessment. After signing up, Tessa will reach out to confirm your slot and coordinate payment.

Come learn and grow with us this summer!
